Description
King Herod orders the execution of all newborn boys in Bethlehem to ensure that the newborn Child Jesus is killed. A group of classically dressed figures are portrayed in various dramatic poses, with a strong use of red and blue colors dominating the scene. A sense of a historical or mythological event being depicted is palpable, with emotions ranging from despair to contemplation among the characters. The images are inspired by public domain black and white engravings by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (published in 1860).
