Fine Art Photography as Social Commentary
My images are born in a camera, but come of age in a computer. The impetus for these images comes from music, specifically from the blues.
While it's true that the blues come from hard times, it's the way people face hard times that matters. People who sing and play the blues aren't sunk in depression, or boiling with bitterness, they aren't killing themselves or other people, they aren't taking Prozac or Valium. They look hard times in the eye and choose to make music – a triumph of the human spirit. These images are my attempt to show that spirit at work during these hard times in Michigan.
I live in Michigan, began saxophone at 60, and photography at 70.
I recently moved. My new community offers less scope for my usual kind of images, so I will be filling in with a new series called "Hidden Gems of Ann Arbor".
